About Glenys

My name is Glenys and I’m a Registered Dietitian. I’m a Health at Every Size® (HAES®) dietitian, which means I don’t believe diets and intentional weight loss are a sustainable path to health.

We should enjoy eating. We do not need to be so vigilant about our diets. We need to stop focusing on weight completely. If you are coming from diet culture, I know that you may have a hard time practicing some of this.

I know because I was steeped in diet mentality for years.

I have years of personal experience with dieting and weight loss. People congratulated me on my weight loss and for 17 years that weight loss was a defining part of my identity. I lived to maintain this weight loss at all costs.

What people didn’t know was that my inner life was a mess. I lived in dread of the smallest weight gain. I simultaneously feared foods and lusted after them. At the height of my dieting behavior, I thought about food 24 hours a day, I went hungry for long periods of time, and I sometimes binged until I felt sick. I cried that despite my extreme efforts, I was not thinner (even though by any standards, I was already thin). No matter what, there was never enough weight loss, enough body transformation, to satisfy me. To say I had a serious case of disordered eating is to put it mildly.

Then one day I discovered Health at Every Size® which transformed the way I thought about weight, diet and body image and I’ve never looked

back. I gave up dieting and with it, self-loathing and food fear. I eventually started to eat without guilt or shame.

Now I help others to get free of diet culture and restriction mentality, and learn to eat normally.

Sounds like your blog is definitely for me! My relationship with food hasn’t always been healthy, and there is much to be said about knowing you’re not alone in finding a balance. Looking forward to reading more.

What a great message from a professional! Have found that health, including weight, is an ongoing project that I continually learn about.

One of the best articles on nutrition I have ever read. Thanks so much for finally putting food and “diets” in the proper perspective. Some of us live all our lives in fear of food and find ourselves in a constant state of semi-starvation. Long lived and healthy cultures enjoy food. What a strong message.
